- Baltimore smolders after riot over black man's police-custody death
(Reuters) - Baltimore residents on Tuesday began to clear the wreckage of rioting and fires that erupted after the funeral of a 25-year-old black man who died in police custody, while the city's mayor defended local law enforcement's light initial response.Acrid smoke hung over streets where violence broke out just blocks from Freddie Gray's funeral and spread through much of the poor West Baltimore neighborhood. Gray’s death has rocked Baltimore with civil disorder not seen in nearly half a century – not since the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968. It has been a long time coming. It was a kind of last straw in a mostly black city that regards the police department uneasily as an army of occupation much of the time.

- U.S. attorney general condemns 'senseless acts of violence' in Baltimore
(Reuters) - U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch condemned the violence that erupted in Baltimore on Monday and said the Justice Department would provide any assistance needed.
“I condemn the senseless acts of violence by some individuals in Baltimore that have resulted in harm to law enforcement officers, destruction of property and a shattering of the peace in the city of Baltimore," said Lynch, who was sworn in on Monday.
She added in her statement: "I will bring the full resources of the Department of Justice to bear in protecting those under threat, investigating wrongdoing, and securing an end to violence.”
